Nothing says Family like Daleks...

I spotted these fantastic custom Family Decals on eBay and decided I had to get them.  However I wanted to make a few little changes, so I emailed the seller and they came back with "No Problem".  So a few days later in the mail came my order...

And I got to say it looks fantastic...

Had to add my TARDIS and K-9...

Doctor Who Logo History by Ray Vellest

If you don’t know who doctor who is, you may ask, who’s Who? Well, Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction television show in the world produce by the BBC. The show depicts the adventures of a time-traveling humanoid alien known as the Doctor who explores the universe in a sentient time machine called the TARDIS that flies through time and space, whose exterior appears as a blue police box from 1963 London, when the series first aired.

1963 to 1967

The logo that introduced the first episode of Doctor Who back in 1963 was featured throughout the First Doctor’s era. It was last used in 1967, on the opening credits to The Moonbase.

1967 to 1969

This logo debuted in the 1967 adventure, The Macra Terror and featured for the rest of the Second Doctor’s era. It made its final appearance in episode ten of the 1969 epic, The War Games.

Back in 1970, this logo ushered in the first episode of Doctor Who broadcast in colour! It was used during the Third Doctor’s era, from Spearhead from Space to the 1973 adventure, The Green Death.

1980 to 1984

The first new logo of the 1980s proved a radical departure from previous designs. It exploded onto our screens in the Fourth Doctor’s 1980 adventure, The Leisure Hive, and featured throughout the Fifth’s Doctor’s era.

1984 to 1986

The sixth logo debuted in 1984 but differed only slightly to its predecessor with a fractionally chunkier lettering and a subtle bowing of the bar underlining ‘Who’. It was last used in the final episode of the Sixth Doctor’s swansong, The Trial of a Time Lord.

2010 Onwards

The unveiling of the latest version of Doctor Who logo coincide with the start of the Matt Smith era of the series in 2010. Unlike any previous visual identity, Logo Ten comprises two distinct elements which can be presented in different arrangements for different purposes: the words “DOCTOR” and “WHO” comprise one element with a “DW” icon motif representing the shape of the TARDIS making up the second element.

K-9 Build - Week 8

Still having issues with the stuttering motors, I've been given a number of possible fixes but as it stands none have done anything to fix the problem.

Here are some of the suggestions I received from various people. The reason I'm posting these is because MAYBE there are others out there who are having the same problems or similar and don't know where to turn.  I hope this helps:

- You may need to install some filter capacitors on the motor leads.
Here's a website that shows you how:

http://www.kronosrobotics.com/an142/GAN142.shtml

You can get those capacitors at any radio shack if you need them fast.

Also, keep your transmitter at least 5 feet away from the bot while doing your tests and stuff.

- I suggest adjusting the trims on your sticks, read your manual that came with the radio. the trims are next to the sticks.

you can also go with changing from linear to expo at about 70 to soften the response around neutral. then change to what feels right to you on responsiveness.

If still too fast see if the radio has duel rates. set your duel rates to 50% to start, and when you flip the switch you will have half the speed the motors are capable of.

- After reading the manual go get a decent radio. my suggestion is either Futaba, JR or Spektrum. I wouldn't use that radio in a mouse droid. and i have been flying giant scale r/c aircraft since '86

- I noted you have your antenna wound up that is a NO-NO on these receivers

- I suspect its a matter of selecting the correct Dip switches and adjusting the trim

This is the correct dip switch formation for my setup
- Run the receiver and servos independently from the Sabertooth

- Twist the wires to the motors, you'll be surprised how much this helps

After much trial and error and attempting to figure out exactly what the heck is going on, I was able to reduce the speed of the motors but adjusting the "End Point" in the software setup for this particular transmitter however no adjusting of the trim of changing the power supply to the servos stopped the stuttering.  And so this leaves me with one more thing to try, get rid of this transmitter and receiver and replace it with a better quality one.  So we shall see once that arrives.

In the mean time I decided to go a head and start working on making the ears move, now theres two ways Ive seen how to do this the first I found a video on YouTube...

However inspired again by Doug Dixon's setup I went ahead and used a Futaba S128 with a linear servo conversion kit on it. A tab slides back and forth on top of the servo instead of having a rotating servo horn. The servo is attached to the inside of the head by Velcro to allow easy adjustment and removal.

Next I'll be playing with the tail, lets hope that once the new controller arrives this will fix the stuttering motors...

What the Cool Geeks are wearing: Tardis Space Program

Today's $10 Tee deal of the day over at http://riptapparel.com/ is this NASA/TARDIS mashup by Creighton Linza

The sale began this morning at 00.01 EST and will continue until midnight tonight where this design will no longer be available on this site.  And like most DW themed shirts its already become a 'Popular Item' based on only the sales of the past few hours.

Here's what the artist has to say:

I’m nothing special, and definitely no artist. I’m a web designer & programmer from Charlotte, NC. I’m also as you may imagine, a huge Doctor Who fan.

This shirt idea came to me while watching a random NASA program on TV, seeing the logo, and putting everything together in my head. It just makes sense.

Personally, this is a space program I can get behind...

Nothing says "I love you" like a TARDIS Ring

So quick bit of back story,

My wife and I were married some years ago BUT at the time I wasnt working (wasnt allowed due to lack of work permit for the US) so I wasnt able to get her a proper wedding ring.  However it wasnt about the ring to her or me for that matter.  It was about us spending the rest of our lives together and growing old with one another.  Little did she realise what she was really getting herself in to.  None the less Marfi has been at my side and supported me in what I do even when she dosnt like it, she is one in a million and for that I am very lucky.

With that said, on to the purpose of the post.  So about a month ago, will doing my usual scouting the internet for Doctor Who stuff I came across a unique piece of jewelery, a TARDIS ring designed by Gino Arizmendi.

The three round stones is the Police Box sign, the two sets of four baguettes symbolize the windows, and a small princess cut below that to symbolize the instructions found on the front of the Police Box..... Perfect.

Immediately I email Gino and made some inquiries, very quickly I got the price list, and had to figure out how I was gonna afford it.  After again talking to Gino he and I organised a sort of payment plan in which I could pay for the ring in installments, once the balance was paid he would send out the ring...

heres the price list (as of April 2012)

EGL Certified Center Diamond, with diamond sides in 14K White Gold:
1.00ct center Princess Cut Diamond G-HSI1 quality is $9950.
0.75ct center Princess Cut Diamond G-HSI1 quality is $6670.
0.50ct center Princess Cut Diamond G-HSI1 quality is $3650.

Authentic Sapphire Center (5x5mm), with Sapphire side diamonds and one
princess cut stone (as the instructions) is $1940.

1.00ct center Princess Cut Cubic Zirconium equivalent set in Sterling
Silver is $380.
Created Sapphire Princess Cut stone set in Sterling Silver is $410.

I did it, I saved up a little each week from the sales of my Cybermat Earrings and my IR Illuminators as well as other stuff and over the course of a month and a bit I was able to finally afford to buy my wife something that is unique, special and beautiful, much like herself.

It arrived only a few days after the final payment was made and its fantastic, truly a work of art and something that is personal, something that will stay in our family for generations I'm sure.

As my wife puts it, shes a Whovian by marriage, I think this kinda sealed that deal.

You can find more details on the ring as well as a way to order your own here: http://artgemsjewelers.com/

If you do contact Gino, do let him know you heard it from me

Doctor Who Toweling Robe: 11th Doctor

Doctor Who Toweling Robe: TARDIS

Personally I think the 4th Doctor robe is my favorite, but $73 is a lot of money for a robe...

K-9 Build - Day 56

K-9 is operational.... sort of!

Well actually he's not, least not how I want him to be.  Firstly, the chains are on the motors had to make a few small modifications but they are there and they work.

However, they are fast, really really fast. So this now leads me to try and figure out how to slow them down.  Plus, once I start using the remote control they seem to take on a life of their own and 'twitch'

The remote I'm using is the Fly Sky FS-CT6, unlike a lot of transmitters it doesn't have settings on the transmitter its self, its actually done through the computer using a piece of software called T6Config  I managed to find the instructions manual here: http://www.leaderhobby.com/img/menu/CT6A_English_manual.pdf but to be totally honest I dont really understand it. Having never been involved in the RC community the terms used are somewhat Greek to me....

I've also noticed that the casters on the underbelly are perhaps 2 or 3mm to low which means they don't allow for smooth movement, meaning the drive wheels sometimes slip on the ground.  So I need to change that too.  That's a pretty simple fix, I'll probably do it today.

I also need to figure power distribution for the additional servos I'm using (Ears and tail) as if I power them from the Sabertooth I've a good chance of killing it.  So here's my plan...  I'm gonna use an in car phone charger.as a step down from 12v to 5v wire it to the battery and use that as my servo power supply.

Gonna post another update soon.  Gotta figure out these teething problems.....

Here's a quick video of my issue!

Anyone have any ideas?  Ive thrown the issue out there to some others and hopefully something will come back to me...
